Explore the San Luis Valley

Tucked into the southern edge of Colorado’s San Luis Valley, Antonito is a quiet, historic town surrounded by wide-open landscapes, mountain views, and some of the darkest night skies in the country. It’s a place people come to slow down, unplug, and experience a different pace of life, while still having plenty to explore nearby. The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is just minutes away and is one of the area’s biggest draws, along with historic landmarks like one of the oldest churches in Colorado, the large adobe labyrinth, and local murals that reflect the region’s culture and history. The Rio Grande runs nearby and is a great place to explore and learn some of the area’s history, while heading up into the canyon is where you’ll find some of the region’s well-known fishing. You’ll also find unique stops like the Jack Dempsey Museum, the outdoor education center, nearby hot springs, the Colorado Gators Reptile Park, and even the UFO Watchtower for something a little different. The valley is known for its dark skies, making it ideal for stargazing and photography, and the surrounding landscape offers year-round activities including hiking, fishing, hunting, off-roading, kayaking, and snowmobiling, with the Great Sand Dunes just a drive away. Whether you’re passing through or planning a longer stay, Antonito makes a great home base for exploring the San Luis Valley while still having a quiet, comfortable place to come back to at the end of the day.
